How large do my scans need to be for stock agencies?
Each agency is different and you might want a larger file than what the stock agency requires.  This will give you additional flexibility in resizing for different purposes. However, 50mb @ 300dpi is the norm.

To what file size can JaincoTech scan my film?
The file size we can scan up to depends upon the size of the film as well as the resolution you'd like.  Each film size has a different maximum resolution, but please note that a higher-resolution scan (above 300 dpi) will result in a decreased output size.

Can you scan slides in-mount?
Yes, one benefit of our Imacon 949 scanners is the capability to scan slides without having to take them out of the mount.  However, note that scanning out of the mount may produce a sharper scan. (Additional charges apply for unmounting).

How do I ship my images?
See 'SHIPMENT' section.

Do you have any local scanning service option for UK/Europe? OR, Do I have to send my images to Ohio or India?
To better support European Marketīs Need - JaincoTech now offers local option for European clients to send images for scanning to our UK office. See 'SHIPMENT' section.

Can I send any size film or print for Scanning?
We can scan all formats of negatives, transparencies, slides and prints.

Are they drum scans?
All images will be scanned on Imacon Flextight 949 virtual drum scanners, as these have been specifically approved by Getty Images. Imacon Flextight 949 can scan all sizes upto 4" x 5". We also have a Creo flatbed scanner for large format film, reflective photos and prints, and other larger originals.

What kind of equipment do you use to scan my images?
JaincoTech uses high-end Imacon 949 scanners in both US and India offices, for transparencies and negatives 4x5 or smaller.  Our US office also uses a Creo IQSmart3 flatbed scanner for transparencies and negatives 8x10 or larger as well as for all sizes of prints up to 11x17.

Adobe RGB 1998 vs. Adobe sRGB
Of the various color spaces available, the most commonly requested is Adobe RGB 1998 color space as it has a much wider gamut than Adobe sRGB.  sRGB is usually used for Web design, whereas Adobe RGB 1998 is used for transparency output and printing.  When deciding on a color space, you should take into account all potential end-uses of the image as well as the requirements of any stock agency you may be submitting to.

DIGITAL IMAGES
Where do I send my images for Raw Processing or Retouching?
Raw processing and retouching work is done in our India office.  Depending on the number of images you need processed, you will send the images (with detailed instructions) to India via DVD or Hard Drive.

For small batches (20 images or less), JaincoTech may create an FTP account so that you can upload the images to JaincoTech's FTP server.  Contact us to set up an account.

WHAT IS FTP?
FTP or File Transfer Protocol is something used to transfer files over the internet, from one computer/server to another.
There are two computers involved when using FTP, a server and a client.  The server, which runs FTP software, listens to connection requests from other computers.  The client computer runs FTP client software in order to gain access to the files.  Examples of FTP Client software include CuteFTP, Fetch, etc.

What Raw file formats can JaincoTech process?
Here are a few of the formats of Camera raw formats we can process:
.CR2 .ERF .MOS .PEF .SRF
.CRW .KDC .MRW .RAF .TIF
.DCR .MEF .NEF .RAW .X3F
.DNG .MFW .ORF .SR2

SECURITY
Will my images be safe if I send them to India?

JaincoTech prides itself in giving clients peace-of-mind when sending their images for processing.  We do insure images for fire and theft while they are in our facility; however, during transit, clients must insure their packages separately.  As for shipping companies to use we recommend using a company that will provide a tracking number for the package; most clients ship by FedEx, UPS or DHL.

How do you protect copyrighted material for unauthorized usage?
JaincoTech takes the security of our clients' images very seriously and follow strict guidelines to ensure images are safe while in our facility:

  • All images are received and secured by senior managers.
  • Keycard access and security guard on duty 24/7.
  • All digital images are managed on a secure database and cannot be moved.
  • No computer has a CD/DVD drive to copy information.
  • All computers used for processing are stand-alone and do not have Internet access.
  • No personal belongings are allowed inside of the secured facility and nothing can be taken out.

KEYWORDING
Yes, we can keyword your digital files; Keywording of scans and digital images is done in our India office.  Options of synonyms, plurals and UK English as well as delivery method (IPTC-embedding or Excel sheet) can be specified on Order Form. See Order Form for details.

How does Keywording work?
Accurate captions and keywords are the only way that buyers are going to find the images they are looking for.  We can deliver captions and keywords in 2 different formats:  Excel Spreadsheet or IPTC fields (embedded in the image).
For Excel spreadsheet delivery, you need only send low-res (100kb-500kb) JPEGs, as long as they are large enough for us to see and keyword details in the image.

For IPTC delivery, we recommend you send as high resolution image as possible, so that we embed the captions and keywords in the master file.  This way if you need to create thumbnails or tweak the image afterwards, the captions and keywords will stay with the file.

Synonyms and Plurals are keyworded to increase the chances an image will be found by using similar versions of relevant keywords.  Certain agencies, including Digital Railroad, do not require synonyms or plurals since their image search has a built-in keyword map that accounts for these.

Does JaincoTech need anything to caption and keyword my images?
In order for us to caption and keyword accurately, it will be helpful if you can provide information that only you (or the photographer) would know, i.e. Location, Model age, etc.  For highly specific images, many clients will send images pre-captioned for keywording only. This information can be provided in an Excel spreadsheet, in the IPTC fields of the images (if digital), or retrieved from the mount (for film sent for scanning).

**For transcribing information from a mount, there may be an additional charge.

I have mostly Editorial imagery.  Can JaincoTech keyword these?
Depending on the subject matter, you will need to provide certain information in order for us to keyword.

In what areas is JaincoTech's expertise in keywording?
We specialize in lifestyle, nature, landscape, still life/objects and interiors. For other areas, please inquire and with your help, we can certainly explore your specific keywording requirements.

What size files do you need for keywording?
See "How does Keywording work?"

If I send thumbnails, how do I get my new or updated captions and keywords into my master files?
Certain programs, such as iView MediaPro, have features that allow you to sync metadata between thumbnails and master files.  If you have a program with this capability, you would only need to send low-res images (saving time).  However, these programs may not work well with large volumes of images, so we recommend that you send the high-resolution files; this way you don't need to do any additional work once the images come back to you.

DELIVERY
How do I get my completed images back?
Completed images will be sent back to you on DVDs.  However, for larger volumes of images, we recommend you sent a portable hard drive along with the batch.  This will minimize the number of DVDs you have to sort through.  For digital images, we will return the images via the same medium in which we received the batch, i.e. DVD, Hard Drive, etc.

If I want my scans returned on DVD, do I send in a blank disc with my slides or do you provide one? Is there a charge if you provide it? If I want it on a hard drive, do I send in the hard drive with the slides?
You can provide media for return of completed images (CD, DVD or Hard Drive). If no media provided, Images will be returned on DVD at the rate of $3.00 per DVD.  (1 DVD will fit approx. 92 50mb files)
Alternative media for delivery are:

  • CD: $1.50 each (unless included with the job)
  • FTP: $0.10 per 50MB of data uploaded
  • Hard Drive (for larger batches): No additional charge but drive must be supplied along with batch

SHIPMENT
What are JaincoTech's requirements for the shipment to India?
For Customs purposes, Clients have the following options in order to avoid any additional customs fees and shipping delays:

  • Declared value of less than $100:
Write on the shipping note "Samples - Not For Import.  To Be Returned to <CLIENT>". Based on our experience, these shipments should not incur charges or delays.  However, JaincoTech cannot guarantee this and you should confirm with your chosen courier as to their policy.
  • Declared value of more than $100:
The client is required to send a Commercial Invoice to JaincoTech five (5) business days prior to the shipment is sent.  (JaincoTech can provide a sample for your reference.)  Once the shipment reaches Indian Customs, it will then take an additional four (4) business days to clear Indian Customs verifications. Please include an Airway Bill so we can use it to return your shipments. Please keep these durations and requirements in mind when planning your shipment delivery.

For insurance purposes, it is recommended that the client establish insurance via a third party insurance company, or refer JaincoTech to a nominated courier with whom the client has an existing insurance agreement. JaincoTech does not provide any insurance during shipment and the basic coverage for most couriers does not cover film or prints, so please confirm with your courier before shipping.

How do I pay for return postage? Do I guess or do you bill me?
For return shipment, please include a FedEx or UPS account to be billed, or a return postage stamp (if sending by mail). If no FedEx or UPS account is supplied, shipping will be estimated and billed on the invoice with the batch. We strongly recommend using a trackable method of shipment for security.

Do I pay return postage from India or does it all go through OH?
Return postage is charged according to the office where you choose to have your scans done. If sending to Ohio, return-shipping charges will be from Ohio. If sending to India, return-shipping charges will be from India.   Images will be shipped to you directly from the office where the batch is processed.

GENERAL
How does Color Correction work?
For transparencies, we'll match the colors of the transparency.
For negatives, we will require a color reference, either as a contact print or as a digital image reference.
For Raw processing, we'll need to see before and after example images (that you've already done yourself) for reference.
Without any reference, we'll color correct to our best judgment as to how we think the image should look.  For images where a color cast is apparent (as with older images, for example), you will need to specify whether we should match the colors to the cast or correct the colors and remove the cast.

Is Dust Spotting included in the price of the scan?
Yes, unless otherwise requested. The majority of our clients request scanning, color correction and dust spotting.  So, we price each scan with those steps in mind.  Our dust spotting is done at 150%.
*We can provide scans with or without color correction and/or dust spotting; for these, pricing would be adjusted accordingly.

Does JaincoTech offer samples?
Yes.  Samples give us an opportunity to:

  • help us better understand your imagery and your style
  • showcase our services to you
  • get your feedback on how we can fine-tune to meet your precise needs

We're happy to do samples for you once we've confirmed details of the project you have in mind.

Does JaincoTech offer any services a la carte?
We offer all of our services as stand-alone as well as custom combinations to meet your specific needs.  For example, we would arrange and price accordingly if you needed Keywording only, Dust Spotting and Keywording only, Logo Removal only, etc.
